More about VW Polo

Some generations had been facelifted middle way through production, with the updated versions recognized unofficially by an inclusion of the document F to the mark number, e.g. Mark IIF. Some click and enthusiasts consider the facelifts to be separate versions and therefore have used the unofficial designations Polo Mark 1 to Mark 7 for previous generations. Each unit of Polo is also identified by a two- or three-character Volkswagen Group Typ number. Official VW Polo history defines Mark I to Mark IV using either Roman numerals or Arabic numerals, with facelifted variants known as "step II" models.

The body style happens to be varied through the life of the car, originally as a hatchback which originated from the Audi 50. A saloon version had been marketed once the Volkswagen Derby.

Volkswagen vehicles built off different platforms have carried the Polo name plate. For example the Volkswagen Polo Playa hatchback sold in south Africa within the late 1990s had been a rebadged SEAT Ibiza which has a different figure shell from the Mark III Polo sold in Europe at the same time. The latest saloon is only available in Asia, Latin America and South Africa and other Southern Africa states.

Show models and motorsport

Volkswagen aided consolidate the preeminence the so-called hot hatch category of high-performance hatchbacks with their Golf GTI in 1975, and has now produced a number of performance versions of the Polo. The first among these had been the Polo GT version of the Mark 1F.

The Mark II and IIF were available as supercharged G40 models. The GT G40 with it is 1.3-litre 85 kW (114 horsepower) could reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 s from standstill and had a maximum increase of 196 km/h (122 mph). It was used by Volkswagen to ready a host of industry endurance speed records, these types of as the 1.3-litre class records for speed over 24 hours and increase over a distance of 5,000 km (3,100 mi).

The quickest type of the Mark III on the UK market was the 16-valve h 74 kW (100 PS) unit. A 88 kW (120 PS) Polo GTI model was in addition produced, but only in a restricted edition in Germany, and this was the first energy the GTI recording label had been used for a Polo. A GTI adaptation of the Mark IIIF Polo, with a 92 kW (123 hp) 1.6-litre petrol engine was furthermore produced.

In 2004 Volkswagen own, a specialist unit of Volkswagen, released a brief number of (Mark IV Polo) nightclub Sports with a 1.8T 132 kW (177 horsepower) engine. Available just in Germany, this was based regarding the one-make racing series Polo Cup Racer hatchback. The Club play arrived with a roll cage inside the vehicle and Recaro racing seats as standard.

A GTI variation of the Polo Mark IVF was launched in 2006. This features styling similar to compared to the contemporary Golf GTI and a turbocharged 20-valve 110 kW (150 bhp) 1.8-litre petrol engine. It has a 0-100 km/h opportunity of 8.2 t and a peak increase of 216 km/h (134 mph).

Volkswagen Individual have in addition designed an actually faster Polo called the Polo GTI Cup Edition. Available with the same 1.8T engine, albeit with 130 kW (180 bhp), its claimed 0–100 km/h is 7.5 s and it has a reported peak increase of 225 km/h (140 mph).

Volkswagen Racing in Southern Africa rallied a four-wheel drive Mark IVF Polo which shared some components with its sister World Rally Championship (WRC) Škoda Fabia; the S2000 has a 2.0 L 191 kW (256 hp) (260 bhp) system.

Mark IV Polos have been entered into the Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC).

There produce been a wide range of one make race show for the Polo, beginning aided by the G40 Cup for Mark II and Mark IIF G40 versions. The active Polo Cup championship for 78 kW (105 bhp) vehicles is a support race at rounds of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters. Comfort line 1.2 CC engine

Relevant models

The first Polo was successfully a rebadged version of the Audi 50 hatchback launched in August 1974. The Audi 50 was discontinued in 1978 as Audi concentrated on larger luxury models. The Mark I and Mark II versions of the Polo are then standalone designs in the Volkswagen range.

Because of the growth of the Volkswagen Group, Audi (in the 1960s), SEAT (in the 1980s) and Škoda (in the 1990s) had been acquired, and the platform utilized for the Polo was revealed with other models.

The Mark III Polo revealed its system with the SEAT Ibiza Mark II. The Ibiza was actually established prior to the Polo, and shared essentially all its mechanicals, the dashboard and different inside components, although there were no body panels shared between the two cars. The saloon and property models of the Mark III Polo were actually re-badged SEAT Córdoba designs, and got no body panels in common with the Polo hatchback. The SEAT Inca and Volkswagen Caddy vans were also based on this model. The Volkswagen Lupo and SEAT Arosa were additionally based on a shortened version of the Mark III Polo system.

The Mark IV Polo continued this trend of platform sharing, with the SEAT Ibiza Mark III and Škoda Fabia markings I & II both being developed on the same platform and showcasing a few of the same engines.

The 2009 Mark V Polo is developed on the latest system PQ25, the same system utilized within the SEAT Ibiza Mark IV that was launched in 2008 and the Audi A1.

The first Polos had been hatchbacks, aided by the saloon being marketed as the Volkswagen Derby.

On the landing of the Mark II model, the saloon was renamed the Volkswagen Polo Vintage and the hatchback style was renamed as a coupé, the Volkswagen Polo Coupé. Unusually, the Polo that was advertised as a hatchback was deeper in concept to an estate. This version was the most popular in virtually every country where the Polo was sold.

From the Mark III onwards, the range had been more straightforwardly conventional, including unambiguous saloon, hatchback and estate models.

3-door hatchback (all forms) - the Mark II and Mark IIF were available in two separate 3-door hatchback styles, one of which had been badged as a coupé

2-door saloon (Mark I, Mark IF, Mark II, Mark IIF)

4-door saloon (Mark III, Mark IIIF, Mark IV, Mark IVF, Mark V)

5-door hatchback (Mark III, Mark IIIF, Mark IV, Mark IVF, Mark V)

5-door estate (Mark III, Mark IIIF)

5-door crossover SUV-style (2WD) hatchback (Mark IV, Mark IVF, Mark V)

The Polo is truly a compact car, with a traditional transversely mounted engine and front-wheel drive. Mark I Polos only came with four-cylinder petrol engines, but for the Mark II, a diesel engine was granted for the initial time, although just in select markets, others needing to delay until the launch of the Mark III. The active range include a variety of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

Early forms used four-speed handbook transmission, whilst the current car is available with either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The suspension system on all models uses a totally independent MacPherson strut front suspension, and a Twist-beam rear suspension. Many designs use disc brakes at the front and rear drum brakes, although some recent designs have all round disc brakes.

The first-generation Polo, a rebadged version of the Audi 50, was introduced in 1975 and was prepared until October 1981. By 1979, 500,000 Polos were produced worldwide. It shared the interior designation Typ 86 aided by the Audi 50.

The differences between the Audi and Volkswagen models were minor, aided by the Polo staying cheaper and much more basic. The two cars were initially sold alongside each other, but the Audi 50 never sold as well, and had been withdrawn in 1978. The Polo was manufactured at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg.

In 1977, the Derby saloon was released, which was simply a Polo, identical to the hatchback from the C-pillar ahead, with a big boot attached (an Audi proposal which was did not available by them).

The Mark I Polo had been available aided by the following engines:

895 cc, straight-4 petrol (hatchback only)

1093 cc straight-4 petrol, 37 kW (50 PS)

1272 cc, straight-4 petrol, (Polo GT, Derby sedan designs, Audi 50 only)

Different levels of compression were used on each size to achieve different power outputs, and the differencean are really numerous, usually differing depending on the country of sale, varying from 26 to 44 kW (35 to 60 PS).

The Mark I Polo and Derby were facelifted in 1979. Occasionally referred to as the Mark IF, the facelifted model showcased synthetic bumpers, a countless front grille and a revised dashboard. The round headlights of the Derby were changed with square ones, delivering it into line with the similar (but much larger) Golf-based Jetta saloon.

The Polo Mark II (or Typ 86C) had been introduced in October 1981, with the major change being the introduction of a third body style with a steep (almost vertical) rear windows, in addition to a type resembling the initial Mark we profile with a diagonal rear window. These two body styles are labeled the Wagon (in some markets) and Coupé respectively, although in fact both are three-door hatchbacks, and in some markets the Wagon designation had been not utilized, with that car staying just the "Volkswagen Polo" without a suffix. The sedan adaptation had been then labeled as the Polo Vintage, and the Derby name became extinct. Manufacturing was expanded to Spain in the mid-1980s following Volkswagen's takeover of SEAT. By 1983, the millionth Polo was prepared. The second million were produced by 1986.

The unit now competed in the supermini industry because of the loves of the Austin Metro, Ford Fiesta and Citroën Visa and it had been among the biggest models in its lessons. Expected to Volkswagen's sub-premium marketing positioning, unfortunately, its cost was closer to competitor versions in the class above, these types of as the Ford Escort and Vauxhall Astra/Opel Kadett.

The Mark II Polo had been used extensively by Volkswagen to develop future innovations, for example supercharging with a 40 mm G-Lader supercharger in the GT G40 version. A 60 mm G-Lader would later become used in the larger and more technically challenging G60 engine used within the Golf and Corrado.

A fuel effective two-cylinder diesel was prototyped in the middle 1980s with a G40 supercharger to overcome its small ability, although this decided not to make it to production. A high fuel efficiency unit which did make production had been the Formel E (E for Economy), introduced in 1983. Thian utilized a high compression 1272 cc engine, overdrive top-equipment ratio and an early stop-start ignition system (known as "SSA") which would cut the engine whenever idle for more than two seconds to salvage fuel whilst temporarily stopped in traffic, and re-start the engine on moving the equipment lever to the left in neutral. Similar systems were later used on the Volkswagen golfing Mk3 and different techniques from other auto manufacturers.

It was a popular import in the UK, competing with the likes of the Peugeot 205, Fiat Uno and Nissan Micra. It is excellence and build quality are among the very best to be found on a little automobile of this era.

The Mark II was available aided by the following engines:

1093 cc straight-4 petrol (1981–1983)

1272 cc straight-4 petrol (1981–)

1043 cc straight-4 petrol (1983–)

1272 cc straight-4 petrol with fuel injection and built with a catalytic converter. (1983–) GT

1272 cc straight-4 supercharged petrol with 83 kW (113 PS) ( G40 version 1987 only)

1.3 L straight-4 diesel (1986–)

1.4 L straight-4 diesel (1990–)

The Mark II Facelift (referred to as the Mark IIF, furthermore erroneously recognized as the "Mark 3") had been a far-reaching facelift of the MkII, including a re-skin of the bodywork. The new look saw square headlights, increased and reshaped tail-lights, better bumpers and a unique inside (dashboard and door trim). The three many body styles were maintained. Along with the beauty differences, under the body the automobile was given modifications to the chassis, suspension and brakes. The new Polo still had the 4-cylinder engines but now as well once the carburettor 1.0 L, a gas injection model had been available with single-point injection and all engines came with a catalytic converter as standard to combat tightening European emissions regulations. The saloon was just manufactured in Spain, and production ceased in 1992.

At the valuable time of launch of the Mark IIF Polo, the finest results model was the Polo GT. This featured a multi-point fuel-injected version of the 1272 cc engine. This released 75 bhp (56 kW) and got a quoted top increase of 172 km/h (107 mph). 0-60 figures stood at 11.1 seconds. Defining attributes of the GT include red piping in the bumpers, black color overhead cloth, a rev counter and a red "GT" badge in the grille. This had been succeeded by the launch of the G40 in might 1991, displacing the GT as the most powerful Polo at the time. The GT squareback was discontinued in 1992 due to poor sales in comparison aided by the coupé variation.

Soon after the release of the Mark IIF, another sporting unit was added to the number — a new version of the supercharged G40, now as a full production model in all markets instead of the limited batch of Mark II G40s. As with the previous unit, Volkswagen Motorsport changed G40 Cup trucks were sold for racing in a one-make series, the Volkswagen Polo G40 Cup. Attributes that define the G40 from other Polo models during the time period (on top of the GT) include a bee-sting aerial, BBS cross-spoke alloy rims, Le Mans inside trim and front and back purple "G40" badges.

The Mark III Polo or Typ 6N, (sometimes referred to as the "Mark 4" by enthusiasts as it is the Polo's fourth guise) appeared in 1994, and had been a completely new model (on a new chassis), available as 3- and 5-door hatchback versions, the latter making VW the final major Western european company to eventually provide four doors in this class. It shared its platform because of the SEAT Ibiza Mark 2. This system in fact used the floorpan of the Volkswagen Golf Mk3 (a multitude of mechanical areas and all of the suspension components were interchangeable among the three models). Although the dashboard and a wide range of mechanical components, such as engines, were shared with the Ibiza, outwardly the two vehicles are assorted, with no shared figure panels.

The saloon and estate models of the Mark III were really rebadged SEAT Córdobas, which were launched a year earlier. These people were referred to internally by Volkswagen as the Typ 6KV, and revealed figure panels with the SEAT unit very than the Polo hatchback models, with some cosmetic alterations such as new rear and front bumpers and headlights. The Volkswagen Caddy 9K van furthermore provides the same platform and front-end design as the 6KV models.

The Volkswagen Lupo and SEAT Arosa place trucks had been based on a shortened version of the Typ 6N platform, and shared many components.

The car was available with the following engines:

1043 cc straight-4 petrol 33 kW (45 PS) (1995–96)

1272 cc straight-4 petrol 40 kW (55 PS) (1995–96)

1.6 L straight-4 petrol 55 kW (75 PS) (Engine Code - AEE)

1.4 L straight-4 16-valve petrol 74 kW (100 PS) (Engine Code - AFH)

1.4 L straight-4 petrol 60 PS (44 kW)(1996–)

999 cc straight-4 petrol 50 PS (37 kW) — all-new aluminum block multi-point injection (1996–)

1.6 L straight-4 16-valve petrol 88 kW (120 PS) (LHD European GTI model exclusively)

1.6 L straight-4 petrol 74 kW (100 PS) (6K saloon and property models only)

1.6 L straight-4 petrol 55 kW (75 PS) (6K saloon and estate models only)

1.9 L straight-4 diesel 47 kW (64 PS)

The facelifted Mark III Phase II (or Typ 6N2; occasionally referred to as the Mark IIIF or "Mark 5" by devotees) had been released in 2000. The hatchback designs featured updated styling including new headlights and bumpers and an all new interior based around that of the Lupo. Although the vehicle had been similar in appearance to the Mark III, Volkswagen reported that 70% of the components were new. The bodyshell had been fully galvanised and stiffened yet not fully redesigned, although some panels were changed. Twin airbags were made standard. The saloon and estate forms was given the new interior, but not the full exterior facelift. Additionally, the 3-cylinder 1.4 TDI engine was introduced for the 3 and 5-door hatchbacks as well as a 1.6 16v GTI version. The Mark IIIF Polo Classic is still sold in Mexico and Argentina. In Mexico is recognized once the Derby.

Both versions of the Mark III Polo were strong sellers in the British and strong competitor for the likes of the Fiat Punto and Nissan Micra. At the time of the release, it had been arguably the better little automobile on sale in Britain in conditions of build high quality and "upmarket" feel. The 1.4 TDI had been considered the best in the range expected to its dependability, fuel expenditure, and relativan electricity, for a small motor.
